What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Contrary to older keys car keys have specific chips in them that are unique to each vehicle. This stops thieves from taking the key and putting it in the car.

The keys can be purchased from the dealership or cloned at the locksmith's shop. The method of programming the key varies by manufacturer and involves turning the key to the on position, without triggering the engine, then removing it within a predetermined time period.

Transponder Codes

As its name suggests, a transponder sends out an encoded signal that contains a four-digit number code when it is being questioned by air traffic control. This signal, referred to as a SQUAWK Code is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It is also used to transmit specific messages to air traffic control in the situation of an emergency, or to alert air traffic controllers to changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are often used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot cannot communicate via radio. They are essential to ensure safe flying.

Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar queries by identifying a code. This allows ATC to locate the aircraft in a busy radar screen. Transponders can be set to respond in different ways when questioned. Mode A transmits only the code, while mode C includes altitude data. Mode S transponders offer more details including call signs and location, which can be useful in airspace that is crowded.

A common sight is a small brown box under the seat of a pilot in all aircraft. The transponder is a tiny beige box used to transmit the SQUAWK code whenever the air traffic control is activated on the aircraft. The transponder is set to be in the 'ON' position, ALT position or SBY (standby) position.

It's not uncommon to hear pilots being directed by air traffic control to "squawk ident". This is an instruction for the pilot to hit the IDENT button on their transponder. The ident button causes the aircraft to blink on ATC's radar screens and allows the pilot to easily recognize your aircraft's location on the screen.

There are 63 discrete codes that can be assigned to aircrafts but there are also some reserved codes that prevent the use of a particular code in areas that is prone to traffic or emergencies. The discrete code block configuration is built on statistical analysis to minimize the chance of two aircraft with the same SQUAWK code being within the same sector.

A transponder keys has an embedded chip that contains the ID code. If the security light on a car appears, it indicates that the ID code of the key does not match the code that is stored in the computer. This allows you to find out everything from whether your vehicle was subject to a recall, to how many owners it has.
